Exercise: Delegating Effectively
1. WHAT TASKS SHOULD I DELEGATE?
Review your current workload. Which tasks are repetitive, time-consuming but not strategically critical for you to handle personally? Which tasks offer a valuable learning opportunity for someone on your team?2. WHO IS THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THIS TASK?
Who has the capability to succeed with this task? Who would benefit most from this development opportunity?3. HOW CLEARLY ARE MY EXPECTATIONS DEFINED?
Are you absolutely clear on the desired outcome and deadline? Have you provided all necessary context and access to resources?4. HAVE I PROVIDED SUFFICIENT AUTHORITY AND SUPPORT?
Have you given the person the authority to make decisions within the scope of the task? Do they know when to act autonomously and when to consult? Are you available to provide support and answer questions without micromanaging?5. HOW WILL I MONITOR PROGRESS AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK?
How will you check in on progress without stifling autonomy? How will you provide constructive feedback, both during and after the task is completed? How will you acknowledge their effort and celebrate their success?
